    Rumor

Thu Apr 10, 2008 at 22:42:58 PM EDT

A few weeks ago, the Boston Globe reported that Boston has received a one hundred million dollar federal grant to tear down and rebuild the Beech Street Projects in Roslindale.  Beech Street residents will be relocated by the end of 2008.  This is great news for Boston.  However, I heard a rumor (and it is JUST A RUMOR) that these residents will be relocated to Dedham; my guess, the new Rustcraft Road complex. There are many hard working people who live at Beech Street and they would be an asset to Dedham.  However, given the level of crime and drugs at Beech Street, Dedham should be concerned. Has anyone else heard this or know how it can be addressed?

    No Relocation (0.00 / 0)
Adamg over at Universal Hub has it on good authority there is no relocation of Roslindale's Washington-Beech housing project residents to Dedham.  Not sure exactly which rumors he was referring to, but it may have been the one posted here.  There is a full explanation from Lydia Agro, communications director for the Boston Housing Authority at the above link.

    It as from here (0.00 / 0)
Adam and I traded a few e-mails about it, he being from Roslindale and having much better connections than I.  I left a message on Friday for the manager of the projects, but she never returned my call.

Once we determined that the BHA wouldn't be sending them to us, the question then became are the 40Bs inviting them in?  The answer to that, according to the people answering the phones at both offices, is no.  They have no problem accepting section 8, but they are not actively seeking displaced residents from Beech Street.

    Re: rumors (4.00 / 1)
I got Adam to elaborate on what I viewed as a thinly-disguised allegation of at best NIMBYism or at worst, racism, on the part of any Dedham residents who might be concerned about this.

I don't live in Dedham anymore, but I really don't think that's fair.

But hey, since we're not being fair, I'd say it's a typical holier-than-thou characterization of suburbanites by urban liberals.

    You're a real peach, darlin'.

Thanks for doing the research, Brian and Eric.

Legacy Place has been around for a year now. How do you like it?
Great! I go there all the time.
Good. I'm glad we have it, but I don't go often.
It's OK. Doesn't affect me one way or another.
Bad. It's been a net-negative for the town.
Terrible! I wish they never built it.
