    Down in the Dumps

(If you are interested, you can see for yourself the size of the barrels at Town Hall. - promoted by Brian)

The Dedham Times reported last week that the Town is going to a new trash pickup system.  Residents will receive a 96 gallon recycle barrel and a 64 gallon trash barrel this fall.  Current trash containers will no longer be used - they will enter the trash stream.

I Googled trash barrels and found that a 96 gallon recycle barrel is 35" by 27" by 46" and the 64 gallon trash container is 23" by 29" by 41".  That should preclude sending the old couch to the land fill.

I suspect that the cost savings to taxpayers will be swamped by the costs of removing trash that cannot be stuffed into that generous 64 gallon container.  We may see piles of household items on the kerbside when someone moves out of Town.  Condon and Paul Parks may be the final destination of broken chairs and desks.  That should eliminate up-front savings to the Town.  Of course, Craigslist may relieve some of the pressure.

Chances are that we we can take our large unwanted items to the transfer station.  Sounds like fun.  People with smart cars will have to tie that unwanted book case on the roof.

One solution might be for a "bulky trash" pickup once every month.  Perhaps, a trash truck with a ground crew could pick up large items at designated times and remove of items previously collected by the current vendor. In time, we may find that the old system was more cost effective and convenient for residents.

Soon, all will be revealed ... or not.

    Speaking of the dump - (0.00 / 0)
Does anyone know what the story is with the transfer station that's at the entrance to the Dedham Mall?  For the last few weeks there has been a terrible garbage smell coming from there.  It never used to stink like that & the sign says it's a recycling station.

Is it now a dump or what?  I assume the businesses and homes near there are pretty unhappy with it.

Except not.  Sarah MacDonald addressed this issue in this very blog a few months ago, and I'm assuming it's still true:

What about large items (sofas, chairs, lawn chairs, etc)?
While the board initially discussed charging for bulky item pickup, that is NOT part of the changes proposed for July 1. Every household is allowed to put out one bulky item per week (bulky items are things like sofas, chairs, lawn chairs, etc.). If you have additional bulky items, you can take them to the Transfer Station (Incinerator Road, next to the Dedham Mall) every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and drop them off for free. If you have a large appliance (stove, freezer, refridgerator, etc.) you must call ahead for pickup. Call 1-888-870-8882 to schedule.

    From my story on myDedhamNews:

No changes will be made to the way white goods or bulky items will be removed.  Residents will be allowed to place one bulky item on the curb each week, and can call to make an appointment for a free pick up of a white good, such as a refrigerator, as well.

I will add an update that we are currently working out the details of how the new system will work, come Oct. 1. It is likely there will be one day of the week for bulky pickup and one day of the week for white goods. I'll keep you updated as we work through the process!

Is there anyone in charge of this website? (0.00 / 0)
Do you currently have a trash barrel large enough to fit a desk, an old bookcase, or a couch?  I'm sure you had a point when you set out to write this article, but it's difficult to find amongst the nonsense.

    BIIIIIG trash barrel? (0.00 / 0)
    so far . . .
    1) nope, none that big
    2) Town seems to be willing to continue the policy of allowing large items to be picked up
    3) that particular service increases the cost of disposal in Dedham, and people in Dedham seem willing to continue to pay more for that bulky item service
    4) the switch to single stream is a seperate issue from the bulky items issue

    hope this helps

    Kei
