    Parks & Rec responsibilities????

    by: notquitesure

Mon Jun 29, 2009 at 20:34:01 PM EDT

(Parks and Rec handles all the parks - places like Memorial and Condon - as well as the fields at the elementary schools. - promoted by Brian)

I am hoping that someone could tell me the exact responsibilities of the Parks Dept., specific to the Ball fields in town.  I have noticed nice mowing at Rustcraft, but the infields remain untouched.
If taking care of this part of the field is NOT part of the Parks Departments job responsibilities, then I apologize.  However, if it is not Parks....then who's is it???  Mother Nature has been rough on us for sure these past few weeks, and has caused a lot of water build up on the fields all over town.  So again I ask...who is responsible for the maintenance of the infields?  It appears to me, that the Parks Dept, or those responsible have left the water clearing up to harried coaches and parents who just want to see their kids play.

If anyone has information, I would greatly appreciate it.
I am looking only for answers..NOT attitude.  'Responsible' replies are appreciated.

    The Maintenance (0.00 / 0)
is the responsiblity of the Park Department.  This year due to budget cuts, we are working with 4 less seasonal workers to get the fields in a ready condition. In the past, we a crew cutting grass and a crew lining fields, now they are limited to the number of fields they can get done in a day.  On rainy day, it is the league's option to try to practice or play a game, but most of those decisions are make by the leagues after our workers are gone for the day.

    good question (0.00 / 0)
the main field is pretty good it is the other 2 fields that seems a little worn.

    Field Maintenence Plan (0.00 / 0)
The Commissioners have directed Asst Director-Bob Stanley to put together a field maintenance plan for all our fields.  He is working with a few experts to finalize the plans.  One of the first fields to be done using the new plan will be Condon Park.

    The main field ... (0.00 / 0)
at Fairbanks or Rustcraft is maintained by Dedham Youth Baseball. DYB has hired an independant contractor to maintain the main field, Capone, and thus the condition. I am not quite sure how Nagle and Collins or the soccer field is maintained at that property. The fields at Memorial seem to be in good shape especially the grooming and base lining of the Men's softball diamond but others in the town have obviously felt the neglect from lack of staff and attention. Which is worrisome as two new fields will hopefully be coming online next year, Loewen and Churchill and how can these two additional parks be maintained if what is currently under the jurisdiction of Parks and Rec. are struggling to be maintained. Hopefully the work of the Ass't Director will payoff as to a maintenance plan for all fields in the town.

    Rustcraft (0.00 / 0)
Come on it's rained for what 28 days and every time I go by the fields on Rustcraft the sprinklers are on like this morning?? If an independent contrator is taking care of them turn off the sprinklers. I can see if we haven't had any rain!!!!

Legacy Place has been around for a year now. How do you like it?
Great! I go there all the time.
Good. I'm glad we have it, but I don't go often.
It's OK. Doesn't affect me one way or another.
Bad. It's been a net-negative for the town.
Terrible! I wish they never built it.
