Legacy Place intersection is ALREADY dreadful.....

    by: Easting

Mon Jun 22, 2009 at 21:17:19 PM EDT

(I'm told that one of the Legacy Place engineers has a bet a certain lawyer in town that once the state recalibrates the traffic lights on Rt 1 that you will be able to drive from West Roxbury to Westwood without hitting a red light.  I'll believe that when I see it, but in the mean time I'm crossing my fingers. - promoted by Brian)

I'm actually looking forward to Legacy Place opening up. But the traffic situation at the intersection of Rte 1 & Elm Street has me very, very nervous.  Every time I've been there in the few days, the cars headed north on Rte 1 jam the intersection.  This isn't just at rush hour, I saw it tonight at 7:30 p.m. I was trying to turn left to get to Rustcraft Road and had to wait an extra cycle because of cars blocking the way.

Adding a Whole Foods, several enormous restaurants and a 15 screen theater will bring hundreds of extra cars.

What can be done, short of permanently stationing  a police detail? Maybe adjust the timing of the light cycles be fixed?  I'm no civil engineer but even I can tell this isn't going to work the way it's set up now.

    It can be done (0.00 / 0)
I've done it on Rte 9. The lights are timed to allow you drive from Framingham to Wellesley without having to stop.  But you have to be lucky and catch at the right moment.

    New Lights---New wait (0.00 / 0)
I got of 128 at exit 15?? the Legacy place ramp saw the sign for lights ahead.. think what light the light at elm and rustcraft have been there for years. I come over the rise and wala there are new light....ok just turn red time to stop I am the first one on the line. I wait as traffic goes by and look in the rearview and see more and more cars behind me filter into the two lanes at the light.....still waiting...thinking this light need to have it clock adjusted..I can see when the mega luxury mall is open to all the credit card holders traffic will be backed up to East street. Time was around 5:00 pm on a Monday night. just my thoughts enough the shopping and make sure your tank is full and the AC in the car is working as you wait in traffic

    Big Retail Centers (1.00 / 1)
Last I checked, large retail centers attract automotive traffic. And life goes on.

    Yes, but (0.00 / 0)
there is a smart way to do it, and a dumb way.  Smart is like South Shore Plaza..... never had a problem there.  Dumb is like Randolph's movie theater with two officers stationed there every weekend to direct cars to park across the street.

Glad to hear that they do plan to recalibrate the lights.  Although doesn't having one person glide through all the lights from West Roxbury to Westwood mean that someone else will hit every single light?  That would be me, probably.

Awesome new light at Legacy Place (0.00 / 0)
One of my biggest questions about Legacy place was what they would do about the off ramp from Northbound 128. The other day, I found out--two-lane exit ramp with an arrowed stoplight. This ends YEARS of aggravation as cars try to get across Route 1 to the left turn lane onto Elm.

I do wish the plan for what is being done would be published somewhere online. I'm sure insiders would say that there were hearings and input or whatever and maybe if I had time to go to Town Hall I could find it, but is it too much to ask that a map be published showing what the final configuration of streets will be, where sidewalks will be, and listing the changes? Such a map should have been published as part of the planning process and open to public comment before holding hearings, etc.

A new development is an opportunity to improve the infrastructure of an area. I hope someone advocated effectively for improved pedestrian and bike issues.

    Backup..... (0.00 / 0)
I just went thru that area about an hour ago.  It was completely backed up.  The traffic coming straight down Rte. 1 had the green light as I was approaching the new light on the exit ramp.  Of course cars continued to inch forward even though there was nowhere for them to go.  The road work farther down Rte. 1 had the traffic all backed up.  The light changed for us but there was nowhere for us to go.

Once the traffic finally cleared we had completely missed one light cycle.  The first car exiting off the ramp didn't think he had to wait and continued to inch forward on the red arrow.  He pulled out and was nearly hit. I can just imagine what will happen when Legacy Place opens.

    10+ minutes (0.00 / 0)
Decided to take Rt 1N instead of East St at around 12:20 after almost getting hit sitting on the ramp we waited for 5 minutes to get on to Rt 1 Another 5 just to get to the on ramp to 128 N so I could then get back on 1 S to 128 s to East St. Total time close to 15 minutes and I never went all the way to the light. The cars/trucks I was with on 1N were still there as I drove under the bridge to East St. Hopefully it was just the construction but it was brutal.

Getting across Rte 1 north to get on Elm Street... (0.00 / 0)
This ends YEARS of aggravation as cars try to get across Route 1 to the left turn lane onto Elm.

I am in agreement, as I have been driving home from work on Rte 1 north on weekdays for years...I was rear-ended one afternoon by a woman coming off of Rte 128, who simply was attempting to get over to the far left lane to take a left onto Elm...not always easy to do with the old configuration...

I've uploaded a map of what the intersection will look like when completed (pdf).  Hope it helps.

    Thanks for the pic.

Now this leads us down the road to How the heck do you get into Leagacy Place??

    That's odd (0.00 / 0)
I drive through there regularly. I've never noticed a problem.

    Amazing (0.00 / 0)
That would be great if they could really time the lights that well, but I guess I'll believe it when I see it.

Meanwhile, it looks like they're gearing up for some sort of big construction project along Washington St. near the Dedham Mall.  Does anyone know what they're doing?  I'm guessing things will slow down when they get going.

They have orange barrels along the middle of Washington St. & so far the barrels make it really difficult to pull out of the mall because you can't see the oncoming traffic.

    Repaving the road (0.00 / 0)
Washington Street is a state road.  Several years ago Town Meeting voted to accept it as a town road as soon as the state got around to bringing it up to Town standards.  I drive down it almost every day, so I will be thrilled when it's completed.

    Several Years Ago ... (0.00 / 0)
Try like 15 years ago. I even think Marie Louis was a State rep at the time! The wheels of government grind slowly. As we can see the State is now doing both the Ames Street and Bridge Street Bridges at the same time.

You have to admit. The town is getting it's fair share of State road dollars lately.

    Great (0.00 / 0)
Oh, that road has been so bad for so long, I'll be very happy when it's repaved.  I suppose it will take awhile to stop automatically trying to avoid the bad pot holes & really rough sections.

Since we're talking about Dedham mall traffic.... (0.00 / 0)
Can someone explain to me how it is supposed to work when northbound drivers on Route 1 have a green arrow onto Washington Street --- and at the same time drivers coming from the rotary headed to Washington street also have a green light?

It would be nice if there was something telling drivers coming from Route 1 to stay in the right lane or at least  prepare to yield instead of gunning for the Wash St mall entrance.  And for them to look magically past the four lanes of traffic between them & other other drivers coming around on a curve who are gunning for the green light since the wait in that intersection is just painful.

I've seen too many near-misses, blamable on both sides of the equation. It's just stupid.

    Agreed (0.00 / 0)
That Washington St./ Incinerator Rd. intersection is the worst in town in my opinion. I used to see a detail cop there all time but I can't remember the last time I saw one. They should put a light up there or bring back the police detail.

Dedham Mall exit on Washington St. (0.00 / 0)
I thought I read that a light was going to be installed at that intersection as part of the construction project that just started. It used to have the same officer on detail there most of the time, maybe he retired.

Great! I go there all the time.
Good. I'm glad we have it, but I don't go often.
It's OK. Doesn't affect me one way or another.
Bad. It's been a net-negative for the town.
Terrible! I wish they never built it.
