    Brian Keaney

    No Principal

    by: quemar

Sun Jun 07, 2009 at 21:34:54 PM EDT

(When I called the Middle School last week I was told he was on vacation, and might be back today.  When I called this morning I was told he was out and it was unknown when he would be back. - promoted by Brian)

Is everyone aware that the principal of the Dedham Middle School was allowed to leave to prepare for his new job in Arlington this past week, never to return?  Given the time of year, the unresolved tutoring issue, and the lack of a contract for its teachers, the Superintendent should have kept him on to finish out the year.  Letting him go is incredibly irresponsible.  Who's running the ship for the next three weeks?

Should the superintendent have allowed the DMS principal to leave his job early at this busy time in the school year?

    I wonder if (0.00 / 0)
it was a money-saving decision for the Town?

    Interesting Thought (0.00 / 0)
Cost could certainly have been a consideration.

Also, if someone resigns and says "I'm leaving - in two weeks" how do you go about forcing them to stay? I suppose if they're under a binding contract you could sue them, but how cost-effective would that be (not to mention what kind of performance you'd get out of an employee with a pending lawsuit). And if they have accrued sick time and a friendly physician, you wind up on the hook for their salary and benefits while they lounge on the beach.

There are obviously many details none of us know (or likely ever will know), but I don't think it's right point a finger at June.

He is still on the payroll, I'm told.

Last week two people offered information to me that he was told by the Superintendent not to return.  They were independent of one another, they are both well placed, and both came without any prompting from me.  One has told me he's already turned in his keys.  I called a third source who didn't know anything until I asked them, but later came back and told me that he was taking vacation time to be with his wife, who is ill.

I left messages for both Superintendent June Doe and Assistant Principal Andy Bowles, but neither returned my calls which is why you didn't see anything from me yet.  Had this not appeared on the blog I would have written a story on myDedhamNews tonight with as much as I knew - that he hasn't been there all week and that calls for more information haven't been returned.

Brian, I think they just don't want to talk to you about anything! Doesn't matter if it's public information or not...
you're a pain to them and I say press on!

Not sure why this is an issue.  We knew the post was being vacated and regardless of the reason it was approved by the School Supt.  Not sure about the unresolved tutoring issue-a board member asked for an inquiry and it was deemed not to be necessary.  Also the teachers contract?  When will the rank and file appear in unison and plan to ratify the agreement.

These issues were not expected, by me as a resident, to be resolved before the principal left.  Again what is the issue-has anyone ever heard of the line " Take 2 weeks off and then quit"

    The "Principal" is in..... (0.00 / 0)
I just called the Middle School and spoke with THE principal.  I had a question and needed to talk directly with him and am happy to report that I was actually able to talk with him.

    Not Wednesday night (0.00 / 0)
I don't know why, but once again all of the school principals were present at Wednesday's School Committee meeting except for Tim Rugerre.  Vice Principal Andy Bowles was, though, and he introduced the MS School Council students.

I've obtained a copy of an email sent by June Doe dated Monday, June 1, 2009 at 6:11 p.m. with the subject line "Principal Ruggere Leaving for Arlington." Here it is, in it's entirety:

    Dear Colleagues,

Tomorrow, Tuesday, will be Mr. Ruggere's last day officially at the middle school. We have arranged for him to be able to devote his time and attention to the transition to his new school in Arlington. I am sure that there will be staff events where Tim will join you as school comes to a close. We wish Tim continued success in his new position.

I do not anticipate the process for hiring a new principal to conclude before June 15th as initial interviews are underway. When candidates are forwarded for consideration I will visit the school with each candidate for you to meet.

We will be supporting Andy with additional admin support however I would appreciate your efforts to assist in helping out during the remaining days.

    Thank you!

    June M. Doe

For those of you unaware, Andy is Vice Principal Andy Boles.

This is getting confusing.  Any news on the hiring process?  Thanks again, Brian, for keeping at this work.

Maj. Major Major Major: Sergeant, from now on, I don't want anyone to come in and see me while I'm in my office. Is that clear?
First Sgt. Towser: Yes, sir? What do I say to people who want to come in and see you while you're gone?
Maj. Major Major Major: Tell them I'm in and ask them to wait.
First Sgt. Towser: For how long?
Maj. Major Major Major: Until I've left.
First Sgt. Towser: And then what do I do with them?
Maj. Major Major Major: I don't care.
First Sgt. Towser: May I send people in to see you after you've left?
    Maj. Major Major Major: Yes.
First Sgt. Towser: You won't be here then, will you?
    Maj. Major Major Major: No.
